What are some general things you should know about research studies?

You are being asked to take part in a research study. Your participation in this study is voluntary. You have the right to be a part of this study, to choose not to participate or to stop participating at any time without penalty. The purpose of this research study is to gain a better understanding of the influence of culture, especially how experiencing two cultures could play a role in development.

You are not guaranteed any personal benefits from being in this study. Research studies also may pose risks to those who participate. In this consent form you will find specific details about the research in which you are being asked to participate. If you do not understand something in this form, it is your right to ask the researcher for clarification or more information (contact information provided below). A copy of this consent form will be provided to you. If at any time you have questions about your participation, do not hesitate to contact the researcher(s) named above or the NC State IRB office as noted below.

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of the study is to examine the experience of individuals who experience two cultures and how culture could contribute to differences in cognitive performance.

Am I eligible to be a participant in this study?

To be a participant in this study you must be between 18 and 40 years old. You must reside in the United States and be Korean or Korean-American. It is not required to be bilingual.

What will happen if you take part in the study?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will complete a computer-administered experimental task section via Psytoolkit and a survey via Qualtrics, a widely-used platform. In responding to the study and survey, you will complete tasks examining cognitive functioning and answer questions about your experiences with language and culture. 

You must have a computer and audio to participate in the study.

There are minimal risks associated with participation in this study and there are no direct benefits to you from participating in this research.

Confidentiality

The information in the study records will be kept confidential to the full extent allowed by law. Data will be stored securely on an NC State managed Google drive. Data will be kept on Qualtrics and Psytoolkit with each participant having a randomly generated assigned ID number to insure anonymity. No reference will be made in oral or written reports which could link you to the study. Individual data with individually identifiable details removed may be made available to the public as required by some journal and funding agency data sharing policies. To help maximize the benefits of your participation in this project, by further contributing to science and our community, your de-identified data will be stored and password-protected for future research and may be shared with other researchers.

Compensation

For participating in this study, you will not receive any payment.
